Red Uakari Monkey Habitat and Populations

The Red Uakari monkey has a bald head and a bright red face. They have long shaggy coats that change from reddish brown to orange. Red Uakari monkeys are mammals and they are herbivores. The Red Uakari’s size is 14.0 to 22.5 inches and its weight is 4.4 to 6.6 lbs. The lifespan is 15 to 20 years. They have very short tails and can move easily up the trees without using their hands or legs. They also live in groups called troops and are very social. The crown of the monkey is whitish yellow. They aren’t good at leaps.

Habitat:
At night they sleep high in the trees. Their home (habitat) is being cut down (trees are their homes). They like water, swamps, and streams. They live in trees and only go to the ground to feed. They live in South America, Amazon Basin of Colombia, Brazil and Peru. They live in the understory and the canopy of the rain forest.

Food:
They eat lots of fruits and their powerful jaws can open a hard Brazil nut. They gather their food from the trees. They eat some leaves and insects. They will only go to the ground to find fallen seeds or roots.
Also they sometimes eat small animals.

Reproduction:
Females only give birth to 1 baby every 2 years. The mother is usually 3 years old and the father lives for 6 years. The female can live to be 11 years old and the maximum age is 23 years old.

Predators and Prey:
They are hunted for food by humans. This monkey has become very rare because hunters are over hunting. They usually survive for very short times in captivity.

Behavior:
They live in large groups of 15 -30 monkeys. Also, you can sometimes see up to 100 together. They spend most of their time in the treetops.

Their Sounds:
These vocal communication calls help Red Uakari adapt to the environment. Each call has a different sound and meaning. For an example the “chick” is a call heard when there is a loud noise and predators in the area.
